Abstract:
In September 1879 San Francisco saw the construction of its fourth Chinese theater. This lecture will examine the prosperity of Chinese theater and its intersection with the growth of Bohemian culture in the city where journalists, authors, artists, and musicians held meetings, readings, theatrical and musical performance regularly near its Chinese quarter.

Nancy Yunhwa Rao is professor of music theory and Chinese American music in the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, New Brunswick.
