Abstract:

In the 1990s, Chinaʼs northeast, the former bastion of state-owned heavy industry, underwent a massive economic reform, resulting in over 35 million blue-collar workers being laid off. This lecture examines the changing cinematic representations of Chinaʼs Rust Belt, ranging from state-sponsored leitmotif films, to independent documentaries and commercial crime thrillers.

Bio:

Dorothee X. Hou, Ph.D., is a scholar of Chinese studies and comparative literature. She is an AISANetwork-Luce Foundation postdoctoral fellow at Moravian Universityʼs Department of Modern Languages and Literatures.
