This is part of the CIRU Distinguished Lecture series, co-sponsored by Rutgers Center for Chinese Studies and Program in Comparative Literature. The two talks will be delivered in Chinese.

Topic: "Four Methods in Modern Chinese Literary and Cultural Studies" 现代中国研究的四重视野

Topic: "Critical Approaches to Women Writing in Late Qing and Modern China" 晚清女性研究
Presenter: Xia Xiaohong (Peking University) 夏晓虹 (北京大学)
Abstracts: Professor Chen Pingyuan will illustrate four methods in modern Chinese literary and cultural studies: university and education, urban imagination and cultural memory, words and images, as well as soundscape and sound studies. Professor Xia Xiaohong will investigate women writings, literary narrative, and intellectual history in late Qing and modern China.

Bios:

Chen Pingyuan is the Boya Chair Professor at Peking University, a Yangtze River Distinguished Professor, a fellow member of the Central Research Institute of Culture and History, and a member of the Academic Degree Appraisal Committee under the State Council. His books includ The Transformation of Narrative Modesof Chinese Novels, The Origin of Modern Chinese Novels, The Literati's Chivalric Dreams, History of Chinese Prose and Fiction, The Development of Chinese Prose from Literati to Scholars—A Study of Ming and Qing Prose, The Establishment of Modern Scholarship in China, Touches of History: An Entry into ‘May Fourth’ China, History of Literature as a Discipline, Illustrated History and the Eastward Spread of Western Academy, The Mission of Chinese Universities, The Spirit of Chinese Universities, Chinese Universities in the Flames of War, Literary History as a Discipline, Late Qing Pictures and Graphics, The History in Graphics and the Eastward Spread of Western Scholarship, and May Fourth as a Thought Experiment.
