Bio

Tomo (Tomonori) Sugimoto is an anthropologist who is currently a postdoctoral associate in the Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University. He is currently writing a book that discusses the disastrous impact of urban greening and urban redevelopment since the 1990s on marginalized communities in Taipei, especially those built by indigenous Austronesian people (yuanzhumin) on riverbanks and hillsides. The book also shows how native people reclaim and decolonize the city and its lands and ecologies through everyday practices such as foraging, gardening, and fishing. Parts of his research on Taipei have been published in journals such as Settler Colonial Studies, Gastronomica: The Journal of Critical Food Studies, and City & Society. He holds a PhD in anthropology from Stanford.
