Abstract:

Against the background of the rapid aging of Chinese society, this talk draws on a series of empirical research and discusses some noticeable characteristics of the intergenerational relationship in contemporary China. Especially, this talk pays attention to the potential but persistent role of culture that is embodied by the belief and practices related to filial piety and ancestor worship. Also, from the perspective of intergenerational dynamics, this talk also addresses the gender imbalance in the various transfers between elder parents and their adult children.
