In conjunction with the Asia Society Museum's exhibition Comparative Hell: Arts of Asian Underworlds, Asia Society hosted a discussion on the conceptions of hell in China and the role these traditionally played in shaping the contours of the moral universe for many Chinese on March 15, 2023 in NYC. Participants included former New York Times China correspondent and author of The Souls of China: The Return of Religion after Mao Ian Johnson and Rutgers University’s Religion Department chair Tao Jiang. Asia Society’s Center on U.S.-China Relation Deputy Director and former NPR correspondent in China Mary Kay Magistad moderated the discussion. (This note is based on Asia Society's report.) Here's the link to the video of the discussion.
